Resource Survey of the Great Australian Bight Trawl Sector

Spilling the catch during the GABTS survey

The Great Australian Bight Trawl Sector (GABTS) of the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery (SESSF) targets two main species, Deepwater Flathead (Neoplatycephalus conatus) and Bight Redfish (Centroberyx gerrardi). Fisheries independent trawl surveys have been conducted intermittently in this fishery since 2005 to provide robust indices of abundance for these two main species. Relative biomass estimates and biological data are provided to the CSIRO for inclusion in stock assessments, the results of which are used to inform management of the fishery under the SESSF harvest strategy.
